Implicit Bias

During the 2020 protests, I heard a term that resonated with me and with my life: implicit bias.  As a woman growing up in the 50’s and 60’s and finding laws changing in the 70’s, I have experienced much in the way of implicit bias.  I see where it applies to those around me and how I have lived it, and with it, during my life and career.  So, I began collecting images, from old albums as well as photographing new ones.  They are combined to show a visual representation of my experiences and those of people who I know.   One thing that I incorporated into the images was a scrapbook given to my mother – in – law when she married in 1939.  The depictions of the wife were as biased as it comes, and I used those images with some from family albums.  Looking at older images, and talking to different people, I have continued to add, subtract, and change the images so that they become clearer.  I hope that the thoughts and ideas in these images resonate with others.
